Openoffice as bloatware?

Continuing on my last blog entry on bloatware, I came across this article, which has stirred up quite a passionate debate: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=120

From this table, we can see that OpenOffice.org is indeed a memory and CPU hog. It is literally taking up about 10 times the processing time and memory to just load the application itself along with a blank file. It doesn’t matter how fast the CPU is, 10 times is 10 times and OpenOffice is simply bloated. If that doesn’t convince you, look what happens when we try to load our large 16-sheet sample.

Although the figures may vary, it is common experience that OO takes ages to load, and it’s heavier. So are many of the applications that try to clone the functionality of applications on MS-Windows. But one must appreciate the fact that openoffice is free, free as in beer and free as in freedom!
